Debunking The BOTOX® Myths — 4 Mistaken Beliefs About Cosmetic Muscle Relaxing Agents

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

What have you heard about BOTOX® injections that simply isn’t true?

At Advanced Dermatology, patients ask us all the time about certain BOTOX® risks and side effects that either don’t exist or have been wildly exaggerated.

Fortunately, under the expert guidance of our three board-certified dermatology M.D.s, our Huntsville BOTOX® team can reassure anyone considering muscle-relaxant injections. We’re committed to empowering our patients to make fully informed decisions, and we give them an honest assessment of the facts and science.

That’s why we’ve decided to share our knowledge here on the blog too.

But before we get into the myths about BOTOX®, let’s look at the anti-aging benefits of this cosmetic procedure. Why do so many of our patients choose this treatment?

What Does BOTOX® Do For Wrinkles?

Since its FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002, BOTOX® has gained massive popularity for wrinkle reduction. This is certainly what we use it for at Advanced Dermatology, alongside similarly high-performing muscle-relaxing agents.

We can testify to BOTOX®’s rejuvenating powers. It works best, in our experience, on certain areas of the face. Including …

  • Horizontal forehead lines

  • Vertical frown lines between the eyes (sometimes called 11 lines because of their shape)

  • Crows feet (at the outer edges of the eyes)

  • Neck lines

But there are other areas of facial wrinkles where BOTOX® work performs very well too.

And How Does It Do It?

BOTOX® works by very gently weakening the muscles behind the lines on the skin. This either reduces their appearance or, for some people, takes the wrinkles away completely (but temporarily!).

So What Does BOTOX® Not Do?

Unfortunately, alongside its well-deserved fame, a host of unhelpful myths about BOTOX® have surfaced. Here are four that we commonly hear from patients in our clinic.

The fear of an expressionless or frozen look is one of the most widespread misconceptions about BOTOX®. But when administered correctly by the best BOTOX® professionals, this treatment will relax only the muscles beneath your wrinkles — not your entire face. You’ll have a natural, more youthful appearance and still be able to show the full range of emotions.

While this cosmetic treatment does involve needles, most patients report feeling a brief, minor discomfort during the injection, often compared to a bug bite. And at Advanced Dermatology, we can apply topical anesthetics to further minimize any pain.

BOTOX® is derived from the botulinum toxin, which is indeed poisonous in large amounts. But the concentration used in cosmetic treatments is extremely low and safe. As we highlighted earlier, BOTOX® has been FDA-approved for over two decades and has undergone extensive testing to ensure its safety. It’s important, though, to ensure your BOTOX® injections are done by certified professionals to minimize any potential risks.

BOTOX® is not permanent (although we’ve had patients tell us they wish it was!). It usually lasts around 3 months. When the effects wear off, your muscle activity returns to normal, and your wrinkles won’t be worse than before. If you want to maintain the effect, plan for regular treatments.

Seek Out A Certified BOTOX® Provider

Understanding the reality behind these myths is a good first step toward knowing whether BOTOX® is right for you. Always remember that a qualified and experienced healthcare professional should administer your BOTOX® treatment.

This is exactly what we offer you at Advanced Dermatology. So, if you’re at the Where can I find BOTOX® near me? stage of the decision-making process, and you’re in the north Alabama area, we hope you’ll give us a call.
